Bhagwani Devi wins gold, creates history

94 year old sprinter from India, Bhagwani Devi, has won the gold in the 100m sprint at the World Masters Athletics Championships held in Tampere, Finland.

The record was created with the timing of 24.74 seconds.

“India’s 94-year-old #BhagwaniDevi Ji has yet again proved that age is no bar! She won a GOLD medal at the #WorldMastersAthleticsChampionship in Tampere in the 100m sprint event with a timing of 24.74 seconds. She also bagged a BRONZE in Shot put. Truly commendable effort!,” a tweet made by the Department of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The tournament was held in Tampere from June 29 – July 10. The tournament is a world championship-calibre event in the field of athletics. The World Masters Athletics Championship is one for men and women aged 35 years and above.

Sprinter Bhagwani has also clinched a bronze medal in shot put.

The youth and people in late 20s are always hitting the gym, but seeing Mrs. Bhagwani’s dedication and hard work, she is definitely giving the young guns a run for their money.

Social media handles are flooded with comments of her admiration, she is completely winning over the internet. Earlier, Bhagwani has also sealed away gold medals at the National Masters Athletics in Chennai and the Delhi State Athletics Championships.
