The Pakistan cricket team won it’s first and only World Cup till date in the year 1992, the team was being led by all rounder Imran Khan.
Pakistan won the 1992 world cup by defeating England in the final, Waqar Younis and Saeed Anwar were ruled out of the squad and Imran Khan was also playing, despite being injured.
25 March, 1992 was the date, it was a complete all round performance by the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, the Shaheens suffered two early breakdowns, openers Aamer Sohail and Ramiz Raja were dismissed in quick succession. However, both Imran and Javed Miandad created a mammoth 139 run partnership, the two made crucial half centuries.
Imran later continued the partnership with Inzamam-ul-Haq after Miandad’s dismissal and went on to score 110 ball 72, with 5 boundaries and a six.
Pakistan made a target of 250 for the Englishman to chase.
As far as the England innings is concerned, Sir Ian Botham went for a duck and the team suffered through a bit of collapse, at one point the score was 69/4 for the Three Lions. Moreover, the partnership of Allan Lamb with Neil Fairbrother could not do justice for their country.
23 were required of the final over, England had a wicket in hand, skipper Imran Khan took the ball and got the better of Richard Illingworth.
History was created, the South Asian country were just magnificent on the day of the final and it was the Pakistani captain who was leading from the front.
Hence, Imran Khan had figures of 9.2-43-1
After the World Cup glory, Imran Khan announced his retirement from the 50 overs format. The World cup final match against England was his last ODI match that he played.
