On Monday, Iga Swiatek climbed to the top of the WTA rankings, becoming the first tennis player from Poland to reach the top of the sport.
Swiatek, 20, succeeds Ashleigh Barty, who announced her retirement from tennis last month at the age of 25, after spending more than two years as the world number one.
Swiatek moved onto a 17-match winning streak after defeating Naomi Osaka to win the Miami Open on Saturday. Swiatek had also won Indian Wells a week prior and the Qatar Open in Doha in February.
In doing so, the Pole has also made history by becoming the first woman to win the first three WTA 1,000 events of the year.
The clay court season begins this week, and Swiatek will be aiming for her second French Open victory in June, after winning her first grand slam at Roland Garros in 2020.
🥇 It’s official today and I want to give myself, my family, my team, and partners a moment to celebrate it and to be happy about it…
