India’s triumph over Australia last year ranks among the greatest in Test cricket: Sunil Gavaskar
Recalling India’s incredible Test triumph in Australia last year, Gavaskar said India’s performance ranks among the team’s “greatest wins” of all time and can be considered a “golden chapter” in the country’s cricket history.
Ajinkya Rahane led India to a 2-1 victory over Australia in a closely-fought four-match rubber last year. India won in Melbourne and breached the Gabba in Brisbane after Australia had outplayed the visitors in the Day-Night Test at Adelaide.
Hanuma Vihari and Ravichandran Ashwin had starred for the visitors during the Sydney Test to secure a draw.
Gavaskar said that India’s win in Australia early last year will go down as one of the greatest victories in Indian cricket history.
It is a testament to the players’ determination and the leadership roles played by Coach Ravi Shastri and his support team that they recovered from a humiliating loss with a score of 36 to beat a rampant home team.
The former right-handed opener said he felt privileged to witness the beginning of a golden era in Indian cricket.
Gavaskar gave a statement to Sony Sports Network to mark the one-year anniversary of India’s victory. The show titled “DOWN UNDERDOGS – INDIA’S GREATEST COMEBACK” will premiere on January 14.
Captain Michael Clarke, who led Australia to the 2015 ODI World Cup title, said India deserved all the credit for battling it out after the team’s morale was destroyed in the opening match.
Clarke said that India chose an attack that worked.
According to the former right-handed batter, “Different bowlers bowl differently; different tactics, different skills, different weapons, so India deserves credit for their execution, while Australia might have taken for granted their success.”
