P.V. Sindhu, who has won two Olympic medals, won the Singapore Open Super 500 trophy on July 17 after defeating Wang Zhi Yi of China in a gripping women’s singles final.
Wang, the 22-year-old defending Asian Championships gold medalist, was the opponent in the tense title match, but Sindhu prevailed by scores of 21-9, 11-21, and 21-15 by maintaining her composure in crucial situations.
The winning streak will be a significant lift for Sindhu, who will be the Indian team’s spearhead at the Commonwealth Games, starting July 28 in Birmingham.
This was her third championship of the year after winning two Super 300 titles at the Syed Modi International and Swiss Open. She now has two Olympic medals and a full trophy case that includes two golds, two silvers, and two bronzes from the World Championships.
