Premier League clubs concerned over Champions League fictures
A proposal has been passed to increase a number of games by 125 to 225 may lead to matches being played over weekends, Premier League clubs fear, with hopes persisting to water down tally to 189.
The Sky Sports News has been told by the clubs that there are concerns that UEFA’s plans will be unworkable and may lead to European and domestic games going head to head – especially if proposals are pushed through for 10 Champions League group matches per team. The UEFA has already committed to expanding the Champions League from 32 teams to 36 from 2024.
Some officials have told Sky Sports News that such a sizeable expansion could well be a drop in UEFA revenue. The new “Swiss format” which UEFA has proposed is expected to be made by next month by the executive committee.
After the league matches, the top 16 teams will head towards the knockout stage, where the format will be the same as of now.
