Serena Williams; the last ride
All eyes on Serena Williams as she takes the limelight ahead of the US Open, which began on Monday. The 23 time Grand Slam winner is set for a final goodbye to the game of tennis.
She had announced that her final countdown has begun earlier this month, the American faces Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic at Arthur Ashe Stadium in what is said to be her final appearance in a singles event of a Grand Slam.
Ironically, she had claimed her first Grand Slam title at the same place in 1999 as a 17 year old girl.
According to the New York Times, Williams will wear a sparkling black bodice with a skirt comprised of six layers, which denotes for every US Open title she has won.
Although, whether she wins or loses, she ain’t walking back immediately from the US Open.
In an interview with NBC’s Today show on Friday, Williams declined to confirm that she would retire in New York — and would not even rule out playing into 2023.
“I think so, but who knows?” on asked if she would retire, she told NBC.
Asked if she could possibly play next year’s Australian Open, Williams said: “I don’t think so. You never know. I’ve learned in my career, never say never.” she added.
