Sergio Ramos has 27 red cards now: is it a record and who’s in the top five?

Sergio Ramos got his 27th red card in his career and increased his lead over his nearest rival by two. The former Madrid captain is considered one of the dirtiest players of all time for a reason, but how harsh is he on his opponents? Are there any players tougher and rougher than the Spanish defender?

Gerardo Bedoya – 46 red cards

The man. The “Beast.” The legend. In 20 years of playing experience, Gerardo Bedoya has played for 13 football clubs and made 49 appearances for the Colombian national team. But nothing says it more accurately than the record for most red cards in a playing career: 46! Imagine the odds at GatoBet (review available at https://bookmaker-ratings.com/review/gatobet-bookmaker-review-rules-support-sign-up-free-bets-site/) for a player who gets sent off at nearly every 13th match?

The Colombian’s explosive nature has always helped him become a fan favourite wherever Bedoya has played. In addition, when you have a teammate this crazy, it’s hard not to get fired up and go 100% on the pitch. This was the case for Santa Fe, with whom the Colombian took the title in 2012. It happened for the first time in 37 years.

Perhaps Bedoya’s only regret is that he is remembered for his notoriety rather than his rare on-field successes. And the former services did not help the Colombian at all when the referee was deciding whether or not to send off Santa Fe in his first match in this role already on the 21st minute. So Bedoya began a new countdown: by red cards after his career.

Sergio Ramos – 27 red cards

Since Ramos left Madrid, the team has left the table regarding red cards for the current season. This comes as no surprise to Real fans, as the Spaniard is the record holder for this figure not only at the club but in the entire league. The closest pursuer, Alexis Ruano Delgado, stopped at 22 and finished playing back in 2020.

Another achievement that Ramos can conquer as early as this year: the highest number of red cards in the Champions League. The PSG player currently shares the spotlight with Edgar Davids and Zlatan Ibrahimovich. Yet, the former Juve player has long since ended his career, and the Swede striker has failed to guide Milan to the play-offs.

Cyril Rool – 25 red cards

Another record player, but this time from France. Rool, a solid midfielder, has a Wikipedia page that says that his 25 red cards and 187 yellow cards are the best results in League 1. Unfortunately, you won’t find a picture of him or any other information besides his playing position and transfer history on the Wiki page.

Alexis Ruano Delgado – 23 red cards

Delgado is a defender who has spent almost his entire career in Spain and fought desperately with Sergio Ramos for the most red cards in the history of La Liga. By 2018, Alexis had reached 22, tired out, and left for a season in Al-Ahli, Saudi Arabia, where he added another one to his tally.

Delgado then returned to Spain in the second division and finished his career in 2020, playing for Racing de Santander.

Paolo Montero – 21 red cards

Paolo Montero can’t complain about the same difficulties that surround the personality of Gerardo Bedoya. The Uruguayan defender gained his most notoriety by playing for Juventus. He has won four championships and several European titles with the Bianconeri.

Montero’s style of play has always been described as calm and composed, highlighting his ability to make the right decision under pressure. Despite this, the player holds the Serie A record for most red cards due to the Uruguayan’s toughness, which can at times convert to rudeness. This combination of qualities and skills has made him one of the best defenders of all time.
