The most expensive IPL Auction buys of all time
The Indian Premier League or the IPL is a Twenty20 cricket league played by eight teams representing eight different cities or states in India. The league was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007.
Before IPL season every year, an auction is held for teams to bid on the players that they wish to acquire. The highest bidder gets the player. The IPL has always been enormously popular among not just Indians, but cricket fans the world over. It, therefore, comes as no surprise that the bids are often very high, Let us take a look at a few of the most expensive IPL auction buys of all time.
- Chris Morris
Breaking the record set by Yuvraj Singh in the 2021 IPL Auction, Rajasthan Royals broke the bank for Chris Morris to grab the South African all-rounder for a whopping 16.25 crores. The all-rounder is going to be quite the addition to the team, with a possibility to partner with fellow bowler Jofra Archer.
2. Yuvraj Singh
As mentioned before, the now-retired all-rounder was the former record holder of the most expensive player to be purchased at 16 crores by the then Delhi Dardevisl before the IPL 2015. Ironically, it was a small return that Singh brought to the team and was released by Daredevils the next year.
3. Pat Cummins
The Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders, who joined the bidding war late but eventually grabbed the Sydney-born pacer for a whopping price of 15.5 crores, breaking the record for most expensive international player, held previously by England’s Ben Stokes.
4. Ben Stokes
Then-team Rising Pune Supergiants broke the bank for the English all-rounder in the year 2017 as they splurged 14.5 crores for Ben Stokes. Stokes was the highest paid overseas player in the IPL auction till last year before Cummins was bought by the KKR for a higher amount.
5. Yuvraj Singh
Once more, after DD’s release, Royal Challengers Bangalore spent 14 crores to acquire the all-rounder.
6. Ben Stokes
And yet again, the English all-rounder features on this list. Afer Rising Pune Supergiants was dissolved as a team. Rajasthan Royals spent close to the same amount the Pune franchise had spent to get the all-rounder in their side, which was 12.5 crores.
