Twitter No.1 as Information Source for Sports Bettors
The kickoff of the National Football League season as the Buffalo Bills pays a visit to the Super Bowl 56 champion Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night, this comes as a signature moment for the sports betting community, and much of their conversation about all things NFL and other leagues will take place on the social media platform Twitter.
The social network has shared data from studies it conducted in 2022 and the previous year, targeting the sports bettors as people 18 or above in the United States who have bet on sports in the past 12 months, reside in a state where sports betting is legal and use at least one other social platform besides Twitter.
“Twitter has long been called the world’s largest sports bar—the place where people all over the world come to talk about sports. Now it’s also becoming the world’s largest sportsbook—not in terms of taking wagers, but where people come to talk about the action and follow their bets. Through research we’ve done, we’re seeing that the timeline attracts a premium sports betting audience that is growing and has a direct influence on their betting decisions. In fact, we’ve already seen more people tweet about sports betting in 2022 than we did all last year, and the NFL season has yet to kick off.” said Mike Dupree, Twitter Director of Media and Entertainment.
“The volume of bettor-focused content and the quality of tweets have drastically increased over the past few years as many states legalized the betting and it was no longer seen as taboo.” said Twitter in a statement.
Furthermore, 72% of sports bettors check Twitter to follow the status of their live bets once they have been placed.
