Vinesh Phogat wins gold, creates history

Vinesh Phogat has brought another glory in the hands of the Indian team, she becomes the 1st woman to win gold in the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. Moreover, she has become the only Indian woman till date to scalp 3 consecutive Gold at the Commonwealth Games.

The Haryanvi girl was up against Chamodya Keshani Maduravalage Don of Sri Lanka in the woman’s freestyle 53kg category Nordic.

The Indian was leading an early by 4-0 and had locked the Sri Lankan, this position made Phogat in a commendable position. The match was looking like a piece of cake for Vinesh. She was all over her opponent.

She won the bout comfortably, this is the second gold for India in wrestling on Day 9. Now, with this India’s total medal tally rises up to 32; 10 gold, 11 silver, 11 silver.

Also, Phogat has won 1 gold and bronze at the Asian Games, 3 golds in Commonwealth Games, 1 gold 3 silver 6 bronze at the Asian Championships. She also is a sliver medalist in the Youth Wrestling Championship 2013.

Vinesh’s cousins, Geeta and Babita are also wrestlers and have brought laurels to the country in the respective field.
