Wayne Rooney’s Premier League volley at Old Trafford

Football is a game of magic and you get to witness many iconic goals, as far as the volleys are concerned, there are majestic ones, sweet-struck ones, thunder ones and then there is Wayne Rooney’s volley against Newcastle on April 24, 2005.

A teenage boy named Wayne Rooney netted one of the Premier League’s most iconic and outstanding goals at the Old Trafford, just pure magic, it was a mixture of skill, frustration and presence of game at the same time.

Lets talk about the match:

Man United were 0-1 down against Newcastle United. On the hand, Englishman Rooney had shown some sight of hope, but there was no expectation that the most expensive teenager would sweep everyone of the floor at the club’s home ground.

During the game, Rooney was also furious, having felt that legendary Newcastle striker Alan Shearer was being given an easy time and was going to be replaced for a rash challenge on James Milner.

As we go about the goal, Rooney had some exchange of words with the referee, just after that Peter Rampage headed a clearance shot. The ball thundered past Shay Given and, at that moment, United fans across the world knew all would be well.

Moreover, Rooney’s right leg had the power of Mjolnir and it felt that the Gods had intervened from above to make the moment special.

Years later, Rooney would write: “I had a dead leg as well at the time, and I remember seeing one of our subs warming up and I think I was about to come off.” Or to put in even simpler terms: “It got headed out and I just hit it as hard as I could.”
