Wistron admits faults, sacks vice president; Apple puts business on notice

The Taiwan-based retailer fired its Vice President, who runs the firm in India, days after employees went on a rampage at the Wistron Corp plant in Narasapura over suspected pay delays. Apple, one of the companies for which the plant in Kolar used to produce, has said that before completing corrective action, Wistron would not obtain any new business from Apple.

“Since the unfortunate events at our Narasapura facility we have been investigating and have found that some workers were not paid correctly, or on time. We deeply regret this and apologize to all of our workers,” said a statement from Wistron on Saturday.

In the statement, Wistron admitted that when it expanded the then-new building, it had made errors. In his statement, he added that there is a need to improve and update some of the systems they put in motion to handle labor agencies and payments. They are taking corrective steps, including disciplinary action, to correct this.

It added: “We are also enhancing our processes and restructuring our teams to ensure these issues cannot happen again.”

An Apple announcement, meanwhile, said its “preliminary findings indicate violations of our Supplier Code of Conduct.”  Apple personnel and independent auditors employed by the organization worked around the clock to review the problems that existed at the Narasapura facility in Wistron, the statement said.

Wistron said its “top priority” was to ensure that all staff is prompt “fully compensated and we are working hard to achieve that.” It reported that along with a 24-hour grievance hotline in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and English, an employee assistance service has been set up for staff at the facility to ensure that all employees can voice any grievances they might have anonymously.

Apple said its priority was on ensuring that everyone is safe and treated with fairness and respect across our supply chain. The release added, detailing the administrative action and transformation of Wistron. It was stated that they are very upset and take urgent action to fix these problems. By the way, Wistron has another plant that is devoted to operating on Apple goods in the Peenya industrial area in Bangalore.

It seems that Apple, which has been pulled into the melee, has taken a serious view of the whole episode.
