The shooting in a metro station has heightened public safety concerns.
Officials claimed many people were shot on the platform of a Brooklyn subway station during the morning rush on Tuesday, a violent incident that heightened simmering public safety concerns as New York City attempts to recover from the pandemic.
According to the Fire Department, 13 persons were hurt, with several of them being shot. The victims’ injuries and status were not disclosed by a department official.
According to a law enforcement officer, the police were looking for a man wearing a gas mask and an orange work vest.
A police spokeswoman said officers were dispatched to the 36th Street subway station, where the D, N, and R lines travel through the Sunset Park neighbourhood, at 8:30 a.m. There was also smoke inside the station, according to accounts.
Trains on the D, N, and R lines will be delayed due to an investigation, according to transit officials. The city’s subway system is operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which said no additional information was immediately available.
The number of shootings in New York City has increased this year, and Mayor Eric Adams has made the increase in violent gun crime a priority since taking office in January.
According to Police Department figures, shooting occurrences increased from 260 to 296 between January and April this year, compared to the same period the previous year.
