Azerbaijan to increase natural gas supplies to Europe via Turkey to counter Russia

Azerbaijan intends to boost natural gas supplies to Turkey and Europe.

“In the European direction, we supply natural gas to Turkey.” Through the Southern Gas Corridor, we intend to supply 16,000,000,000. “Next year, natural gas will be fully exported to Turkey and Europe,” he added.

Azerbaijan and the EU have economic cooperation in various fields.

The EU places a high value on energy supply diversification, and the Southern Gas Corridor plays a critical role in this regard.

On December 31, 2020, Azerbaijan began commercial gas supplies to Europe via the TAP.

In 2021, European countries purchased 8.2 billion m3 of gas, with volume expected to increase in the coming years.

On Thursday, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev paid a visit to Turkey, where he met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and discussed bilateral relations, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and energy.

According to Shahbazov, the two leaders discussed the Southern Gas Corridor project because energy issues were at the top of the agenda at the meeting.

He emphasised that energy would be at the heart of Turkish-Azerbaijani relations, citing last year’s Susha Declaration, which elevated relations between Turkiye and Azerbaijan to the level of an alliance.

“Azerbaijan has an estimated $19.3 billion investment in Turkey, $17 billion of which is in energy,” he explained.

The Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council’s eighth ministerial meeting, held in Baku on February 4, reaffirmed Azerbaijan and the European Union’s strategic energy partnership, which is based on shared goals for long-term energy security and green energy transition.

More than 8 billion m3 of this volume will be exported to Turkey, and more than 7 billion m3 will be exported to Italy. Georgia, Bulgaria, and Greece will share the remaining gas.
