Black Man named Patrick fatally shot in back of head by Michigan cop

Patrick Lyoya was fatally shot by the Michigan cop over the violent climax of a traffic stop. Patrick was killed outside a house in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The incident began after the officer stopped Lyoya over suspicions involving his license plate.  The white officer repeatedly ordered Lyoya to “let go” of his Taser, at one point demanding: “Drop the Taser!”

An independent autopsy confirms that Patrick Lyoya, a Black man, was shot in the back of the head by a Michigan police officer while facedown on the ground, lawyers for his family said Tuesday.

The finding by a former Detroit-area medical examiner matches what was seen last week on a video released by the Grand Rapids police chief. The official autopsy report has not been released to the public. The autopsy was performed by Dr. Werner Spitz. Crump said Lyoya could have lived until his early 80s. Lyoya’s death has outraged his family as well as many people who have watched video of the confrontation with an officer.

According to Reuters, Lyoya’s family is demanding that authorities dismiss the officer who shot him from the force and file criminal charges against him. Patrick Lyoya’s father says he and his family have a right to know the name of the white officer who fatally shot the 26-year-old Black man.
