Delay Ukraine’s membership to EU: say some members of EU bloc

Ukraine awaits a response for its proposal of membership in EU.

Delay Ukraine’s membership, suggest some EU members. As the war inflicted Ukraine suffers, it expects its proposal of membership in EU to be decided in fast track.

Last month, the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy could see the war inching closer. Thus, last month he formally applies for the membership of EU.

What is EU bloc?

EU or European Union bloc had started with merely 6 members and today, it has 27 members.

Basically, several diplomats explain that the membership process of EU is rather complicated and long. The process of granting EU’s membership lasts for at least 15-18 months. In fact, it could even take a decade or more.

It involves multiple criterion. Moreover, it needs to abide by rule of law of the EU.

Which countries want to delay Ukraine’s membership and why?

Germany, Netherlands, and some other countries want to delay EU’s decision on Ukraine’s membership in EU. It is because they want EU’s executive to take a decision on EU’s membership process.

Some diplomats say that the countries demanding a delay of decision want to deliver a practical support to Ukraine and suggest a solution to its ongoing war. As per them, EU could even support Ukraine without formally granting it a status of candidacy.
