As per sources, Elon Musk strongly objected to a claim made by an American professor that the Tesla CEO’s family-owned emerald mines in South Africa during the Apartheid era. In the video clip, Reich made the case that some self-described self-made millionaires came from affluent backgrounds. He mentioned Bill Gates as an example, whose mother allegedly used her relationships to assist Microsoft to secure a contract with IBM. A quarter-million-dollar investment from his parents helped Jeff Bezos launch Amazon in his garage. The US politician and academic also claimed that Musk is sprung from a family that operated an emerald mine in South Africa during the apartheid era.

Based on the video, Robert Reich attempted to dispel the illusion of self-made billionaires in his video by pointing out that many of the richest people in the world began their professions with a sense of financial certainty that allowed them to take bigger risks for bigger rewards. Musk clarified the situation last year by calling the piece fake. He claimed that he came to Canada with $2500 and supported himself while attending college. By the time it was ended, Musk claimed he owed more than $100,000 in student loans.
