List of countries where a novel Covid-19 variant has been discovered as part of the Omicron outbreak
The new, potentially more contagious Covid-19 version, first discovered in South Africa, has already spread to numerous other nations, causing governments throughout the world to scramble to stem the spread.
In addition, because of the threat of Omicron, a novel coronavirus type, numerous countries have imposed travel restrictions on South Africa and its neighbors.
Omicron has been designated as a ‘variant of concern’ by the World Health Organization, and it will take several weeks to determine whether there are major changes in transmissibility, severity, or consequences for Covid vaccinations, testing, and therapies.
The following is a list of countries where the novel Covid-19 version has been reported:
1. Australia
The Covid Omicron strain has been found in two passengers in Sydney, according to the Australian health authority. Both travellers landed in Australia via Doha on a Qatar Airways trip from southern Africa.
Twelve passengers from southern Africa who were on the same trip did not test positive for Covid, but they were quarantined.
2. The country of Italy
An Italian who travelled to Mozambique tested positive for the omicron variant, according to the Italian news source LaPresse. Five members of the household have tested positive, including two school-aged children.
3. Germany
Two travellers who arrived on a flight from South Africa on November 24 were found to have the omicron variant. The genome sequencing has not yet been completed, but it has been “confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is this mutation,” according to German news agency DPA.
4. Netherlands
According to the Dutch health authorities, 61 Covid-19 cases have been discovered among passengers who flew from South Africa on Friday, with at least some illnesses being of the novel omicron form.
5. The United Kingdom
The Omicron variation has been found in two cases in the United Kingdom. The two associated instances of the new strain found in Britain, according to British health secretary Sajid Javid, were linked to travel to southern Africa.
6. Israel
After discovering a case of the new Covid-19 strain on November 26, the country enacted a series of emergency measures.
The new strain, identified as B.1.1.529, was discovered in a Malawian who had recently arrived in South Africa, according to the health ministry.
7. Hong Kong
Following South Africa, Hong Kong is the second country to report two Omicron strain cases.
8. Botswana
So far, only one case of the novel coronavirus variety has been documented in the country.
9. Belgium
Yesterday, one case of the novel Omicron strain was discovered in Belgium.
So yet, no cases of the Omicron variant have been recorded in India. Two South African nationals tested positive in Karnataka yesterday. They were, however, infected with the Delta variation rather than the novel Omicron strain.
10. Switzerland
On Monday, the first possible case of COVID-19’s Omicron version was discovered in Switzerland.
According to the Federal Office for Public Health, the instance involves an individual who returned to Switzerland from South Africa about a week ago.
It stated that testing will clarify the situation in the following days.
11. Canada
On Monday, Canada verified the first two occurrences of the omicron COVID-19 variant in the country, which occurred in two people who had just visited Nigeria.
