Russia Struggled to Capture a Ukrainian Town, Intercepted Radio Messages Show Why

The Visual Investigations team at The New York Times examined dozens of battlefield radio transmissions between Russian forces during an initial invasion of Makariv, a town outside of Kyiv. They show an army beset by logistical issues and communication breakdowns.

The US and its European allies have portrayed President Vladimir Putin’s invasion as an imperial-style land grab that has so far been poorly executed because Moscow underestimated Ukrainian resistance and Western determination to punish Russia.

Russian forces have already surrounded some Ukrainian cities.

Ukrainian forces reclaimed control of Makariv, a town 30 miles west of Kyiv, after days of fighting.

As the Russians retreated, the “state flag of Ukraine was raised over the city of Makariv,” according to the post.

The ongoing Russian airstrikes had caused significant damage to Makariv. CNN confirmed the authenticity of photos posted on social media on March 12 showing extensive damage to apartment complexes, schools, and a medical facility.

Russian forces may also be hampered from crossing the Irpin River and capturing Kyiv from the west due to rising floodwaters in the region.
