Trump’s followers attack Capitol, China mocks US online about the ‘beautiful sight’ of anarchy

China’s Internet exploded in joy at America’s troubled democracy after President Donald Trump’s followers burst into the US Capitol, comparing anarchy with Hong Kong’s anti-government demonstrations of 2019.

On Thursday morning, the state media newspaper Global Times tweeted side-by-side visual similarities of demonstrators in Hong Kong seizing the City’s Legislative Council Building in July 2019 with the Washington riots on Wednesday.

The latter saw hardcore Trump supporters storm the U.S. Capitol to protest the election setback, take selfies, suffocate with guards, and ransack areas of the house.

“@SpeakerPelosi once referred to the Hong Kong riots as ‘a beautiful sight to behold’,” the Global Times said in a tweet, referring to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s June 2019 statement on the mass pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, which were largely peaceful at the time.

“It remains yet to be seen whether she will say the same about the recent developments in Capitol Hill.”

The hashtag “Trump supporters storm US Capitol” slammed through Weibo on Thursday, racking up 230 million views as users compared global support for Hong Kong demonstrators to the outpouring of criticism of the pro-Trump crowd.

Hong Kong demonstrators invaded the legislature to claim democracy—a fight they seem to have lost as China smothers the territory with national security laws, sweeping opposition leaders, and mass arrest activists.

U.S. President-elect Joe Biden said the U.S. rioters were disrupting stability and seeking to reverse Trump’s loss in the November election.
