‘Sex Education’ star Emma Mackey won’t return for season 5
While Sex Education fans are waiting eagerly for the fourth season of the series, Maeve Wiley actor Emma Mackey has confirmed that she won’t be in the fifth season.
The actor won the Rising Star award at the 2023 BAFTAs Sunday for her roles in “Sex Education,” “Eiffel,” “Death on the Nile,” and “Emily.”
However, when asked by the press backstage at the BAFTA whether she’d be returning to her surly teen character, Maeve Wiley on the acclaimed Netflix series, here’s what she replied.
“Season 5? I’ve just finished the fourth one last week!” Mackey told the Radio Times. “No, I don’t think I’ll be in season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.”

In fact, ahead of the production of the fourth season of Sex Education, Mackey also revealed that she would be in fewer scenes in the season.
Nonetheless, the actor is certainly on the rise after success in Death on the Nile, as Emily Brontë in Emily, and an upcoming part in doppelgänger Margot Robbie’s Barbie movie, directed by Greta Gerwig.
Even Ncuti Gatwa who plays Eric Effiong on Sex Education recently announced his departure from the series. He is also Emma Mackey’s co-star in the upcoming movie Barbie.
Therefore, since Netflix has completed production on the next batch of episodes, it seems likely that “Sex Education” season four will arrive on the platform towards the latter half of 2023.
