Vinesh Phogat seals bronze for India
India women’s wrestler Vinesh Phogat has become the first Indian to pick up two world championship medals on Wednesday, she claimed the bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championships 2022 in Belgrade. Phogat beat Jonna Malmgrenof of Sweden 8-0 in the playoff to pick up the bronze in the 53kg category.
Although, due to her knee injury, she was facing minor difficulty, but at the end the Indian pride showed up great tenacity to put it aside and come out victorious.
With her performance, India has earned its first medal in the year’s edition of the wrestling world championships taking place in the Serbian capital of Belgrade.
However, Phogat looked a bit jaded and lost her balance in the final seconds to be pinned by the Asian silver medallist in the women’s freestyle 53kg. But she picked herself up after the loss and made it through to the way to the bronze medal bout and battled through pain to come out as the ultimate winner against Malmgrenof.
This is Phogat’s second medal at the world championships after her bronze medal performance in Nur Sulthana in the year 2019.
Phogat clinched the gold medal in the recently held Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in the women’s 53 Kg category. Her triumph in England made it her third gold medal at the CWG in three successive editions in the past being victorious outings at 2014 Glasgow and 2018 Gold Coast Games.
