Samsung’s Slideable Phone
We have already seen many foldable devices by now and leading smartphone makers including Samsung, OPPO, Vivo, and Motorola have already released their foldable devices in the market. But what comes as the biggest drawback to these devices is their form factor itself.
Take the example of Samsung’s Z Fold devices. These devices have a cover display and can be opened to reveal an inner display with a larger screen size that cannot be equated to that of a tablet but to that of a mini-tablet. While the device is foldable too, users are left with a device that is more thicker in size. So what is created to offer convenience to users, in some manner causes inconvenience to them.

This is where Samsung’s slideable device comes in. Samsung’s patent for such a device is more than what we had expected it to be. The device can be configured into four form factors depending on the user’s need or situation and doesn’t leave the user with the burden of holding a device that is thicker in shape.
The patent that Samsung has received shows that the device has four modes which include a band mode, phone mode, phablet mode, and tablet mode. The band mode will have a width that is smaller than that of a normal mobile device and will thereby offer its users more grip while in a crowded place and the mobile mode will offer the same convenience that of a smartphone. When the user needs a little larger display, switching to the phablet mode can be the best for more typing comfort and viewing experience. In the comfort of your home or office, tablet mode can be used for entertainment or to carry forward work needs.
The tablet mode will have a diagonal screen size of more than 7 inches and the phablet mode will offer its users a screen size of between 5.5 inches to 7 inches. The mobile mode on the other hand will have a display of between 4.5 inches and 5.5 inches, and the band mode will be having a diagonal screen size of less than 4.5 inches.
What is to be noted here is that, for all the modes, users won’t have to manually slide the device, but the device itself can automatically switch to the mode. Sensing their needs, the device will also suggest to its users the required mode for a better user experience.
From what can be concluded, Samsung is most likely to work on this slideable design for the next few years and we’ll probably have to wait until then to get a hold of a slideable device from Samsung.
