Sony completes acquisition of Destiny 2 developer, Bungie
The developer of the game Destiny 2, Bungie, is officially a part of Sony. Sony announced its intention to acquire Bungie earlier this year in the month of January. The acquisition of the gaming studio is finally complete. An SEC filing on Friday reports that the deal was approximately worth $3.7 billion.
Bungie will continue to independently publish and develop their games with their creative aspects. The CEO of Bungie, Pete Parsons mentioned this in a blog post from the original announcement of the acquisition. Bungie’s Joe Blackburn and Justin Truman mentioned that future games in development would thus won’t be PlayStation exclusives.

However, Sony do possess plans to depend on Bungie for its world-class expertise in multi-platform development and live game services. President and CEO of Sony Entertainment, Jim Ryan asserted in January that leaning on Bungie for its expertise would help them deliver on their vision of expanding PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers. Sony looks at live service games as a critical part of PlayStation’s future. Sony plans to launch more than 10 new live service games by March 2026.
While Bungie is officially part of Sony and Take-Two has acquired Zynga in May, peers wait for Microsoft to purchase Activision Blizzard. Microsoft is supposed to wrap up a massive $68.7 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard. Microsoft expects to close the deal sometime in its fiscal year 2023, which starts this month and will run through June 2023.
