Sony Unveils PlayStation 5 Pro Launching November 7 2024 with Enhanced Performance 8K Support and Spectral Super Resolution

Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed the PlayStation 5 Pro, scheduled for release on November 7, 2024. This new model in the PlayStation lineup aims to offer improved performance and visual capabilities compared to the standard PS5.

Hardware Specifications

The PS5 Pro features several hardware upgrades:

  • GPU with 67% more Compute Units and 28% faster memory (Although the press release didn’t mention which GPU).
  • Enhanced ray tracing capabilities
  • AI-driven upscaling technology called “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution”

Sony states these improvements allow for up to 45% faster rendering compared to the current PS5. The AI-powered upscaling is described as using machine learning to provide enhanced image clarity.

Compatibility and Game Support

The PS5 Pro will support over 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. Some of these may benefit from a “PS5 Pro Game Boost” feature. Several game developers plan to release updates for their titles to utilize the new hardware capabilities.

Sony has confirmed that the PS5 Pro is compatible with existing PS5 accessories. This includes:

  • PlayStation VR2
  • PlayStation Portal
  • DualSense Edge controller
  • Access controller
  • Pulse Elite headset
  • Pulse Explore earbuds

The user interface and network services will remain the same as the current PS5.

Technical Features and Design

The additional features include Wi-Fi 7 support, VRR, and 8K output capability. The console’s dimensions are similar to the current PS5 models, and it comes with a 2TB SSD. In terms of design, unlike the PS5 (Online Version), it features three bold stripes on each side. As shown in the image below, there is also an option to attach a CD-ROM. Additionally, the front includes two USB Type-C slots, with the power button located at the bottom.

Pricing and Availability

The PS5 Pro is priced at:

  • $699.99 USD
  • £699.99 GBP
  • €799.99 EUR
  • ¥119,980 JPY

It will be available as a disc-less console, with an option to purchase a separate disc drive. Preorders start on September 26, 2024, ahead of the November 7 launch date.
