Apple now maybe testing a smaller version of macOS, codenamed Mendocino for Apple iPad Pro M2

Rumours about macOS for iPad have been around for a long time.

Apple might launch a smaller version of macOS exclusive for the M2 iPad Pro with it expected at some point in 2023. The device might still run iPad-optimised apps and not macOS versions.

Apple is currently working on a smaller version of macOS exclusively for the new iPad Pro M2 that would run iPad apps but support a macOS-like UI that’s larger and hopefully optimised for touch input.

The source reports that is effectively the next version of macOS, codenamed “Mendocino”, which would suggest that if macOS 14 comes out next year it would come to both Macs and iPads.

The testing includes a 25 percent larger macOS UI meant for touchscreens since no MacBook supports a touchscreen display. The apps in the macOS version, however, would still be optimised for iPad, not Mac.

Another possibility could be an entirely revamped iPadOS, instead of macOS for the iPad models. Apple could be working on a better version of iPadOS that borrows some macOS features while still being optimised for tablets.

The company recently launched the new iPad with an all-screen design featuring a large 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display which is powered by an A14 Bionic chip.

The device featured advanced cameras, fast wireless connectivity, USB type C, support for the new Magic keyboard Folio, and more.

Available in 28 countries and regions, including the US, the wifi models of the iPad were available with a starting price of Rs 44,900 and wifi+cellular models at Rs 59,900.

The iPad in 64GB and 256GB configurations, came in blue, pink, yellow, and silver colors. The device has updated cameras including an Ultra Wide 12MP front camera located along the landscape edge of the iPad for an even better video calling experience, and an updated 12MP back camera to capture sharp, vivid photos and 4K video.
