Gemini replaces Google Assistant on Chromebooks with ChromeOS 134 update

A few days back Google officially announced that Gemini will be replacing Google Assistant on Android phones later in 2025. It was revealed that later this year, classic Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices or available for new downloads.

Now after Android phones, Gemini will be replacing Google Assistant on Chromebooks. Yesterday a new ChromeOS M134 update was introduced for Chromebooks. This update included various new features and changes in which it was mentioned that starting with M134, assistive experiences on Chromebooks will be powered by Gemini. When triggering Assistant, users will be automatically directed to the Gemini app on their Chromebook.

The Gemini App/Extension for @Google Home is not available on the web, just Android and iOS at the moment. Gemini’s capabilities are far beyond Google Assistant, therefore it is expected to provide an entirely new kind of help to users and enhance their experience.

Google has already confirmed that they will be upgrading tablets, cars, and devices that connect to your phone, such as headphones and watches to Gemini. A new experience powered by Gemini will also be brought to home devices like speakers, displays, and TVs. The details regarding this will be shared by the company in the next few months.
