Google’s New Scam Detection Feature Introduced to Phone by Google Beta Users

The new Scam Detection feature that Google has introduced is to protect Android users from scams and frauds. Users of the Pixel 6 series and newer models in the US, who are currently English-speaking users of Phone by Google beta app, will be receiving the feature and can make use of it as of now. In order to enable it, visit Phone by Google beta app, navigate to the upper right menu, and tap on Settings, you will be able to find the Scam Detection option there. Turn it on by clicking on the toggle button.

Speaking of how it works, the Scam Detection feature works on a powerful on-device AI and by analyzing call patterns in real time, if it associates with common scam call patterns, users will be notified of it. Audio and haptic alerts along with a visual warning sign will be provided to inform or warn users that the ongoing call is a possible scam call.

About the privacy, Google as always values user privacy and in the new Scam Detection feature too, it is ensured. The Scam Detection feature is turned off by default and users will always be able to turn it off in the future or while making a call after enabling it. Also to add, the detection model and the processing takes place fully on the device. No audio or audio transcription is stored on the device, is not sent to Google servers or other platforms, and cannot be retrieved after the call.

As this new Scam Detection feature is still in the beta phase, Google wants its users to give their valuable feedback in order to prepare for the next phase roll-out or testing. Users will be able to submit their feedback on Phone by Google beta > Menu > Help & Feedback.
