Google Rolls Out 110 New Languages To Google Translate
Google Translate has been a really helpful tool for users worldwide in translating texts, documents, and much more in their native language. However many users still faced language barriers as many languages were not supported by Google Translate.
In 2022, Google added 24 new languages using Zero shot machine translation. Later, the company announced the 1000 Languages initiative, a commitment to build AI models that will support the 1000 most spoken languages worldwide. Well today with the help of Google’s PaLM 2 large language model, the company is rolling out 110 new languages to Google Translate.
110 New Languages Rolled Out To Google Translate
The languages rolled out include some major world languages, small communities speak others of indigenous people, some from Africa like Fon, Kikongo, Luo, Ga, Swati, Venda, and Wolof, and a few have almost no native speakers but active revitalization efforts.
Names of some of the newly supported languages-
- Afar
- Cantonese
- Manx
- NKo
- Punjabi (Shahmukhi)
- Tamazight (Amazigh)
- Tok Pisin
Google has also announced that shortly even more language varieties and spelling conventions over time. These newly supported languages will be available for the Google Translate app for both Android and iOS.
