Users of Western Digital’s HMB-equipped SSD lineups have been facing a BSOD issue (or Blue Screen of Death) following the Windows 11 24H2 update. The affected users are advised to update their SSD firmware, however, with the risk of complete data loss.

Windows 11 24H2 BSOD Fix Released by Western Digital
On the Western Digital community forum, users have been posting their worries and concerns following the Window 11 24H2 update and the company has now released the fix for the BSOD issue. As per identified by the company, the problem was due to a misconfigured host memory buffer (HMB) allocation, and this was easily able to be solved with just a minor registry edit.
WD_BLACK SN770 NVMe SSD 2TB, WD_BLACK SN770M NVMe SSD 2TB, WD Blue SN580 NVMe SSD 2TB, WD Blue SN5000 NVMe SSD 2TB, and SanDisk Extreme M.2 NVMe SSD 2TB are the affected NVMe models. As mentioned, Western Digital has advised all the users of the mentioned NVMes to update the SSD firmware version, and if not done, users may not be able to receive the latest versions of Windows 11. Also, in order to overcome the chance of data loss, users may copy their files to another drive.
Regarding the update process, install the Western Digital dashboard on affected devices and then open it and navigate to ‘Tools’ where one can find the firmware update. Click on ‘Update Firmware’. After the update, users will have to restart their devices to complete the process. Once rebooted, the device will have the updated SSD firmware.
