The newly growing microblogging site, Koo is the Indian alternative of Twitter where users are allowed to express their views using Indian languages.

It’s discussions are quite similar to Twitter and you may like anyone you can. The app provides a variety of features from sharing opinions, follow actors, cricketers, journalists and other interesting people. It also allows users to categories their posts with hashtags and also tag other people in mentions.

It’s logo features a yellow bird which was streamlined on May 14, 2021. It marks the verified accounts with a yellow tick and also supports dark theme. It’s feature “Talk to Type” which allows users to use app’s voice assistant to make posts.

But Who Own Koo App?

The newest microblogging site was cofounded by entrepreneurs Aprameya Radhakrishna and Mayank Bidwatka in Bengaluru, India in the year 2020. The parent company Bombinate Technologies Pvt Ltd has been operating not only Koo but it also launched and is operating the Indian version of Quora called Vokal. The company also raised Series A funding in 2018 from a clutch of investors including Blume Ventures, Kalaari Capital and Accel Partners India.

The Koo founder Radhakrishna also founded an online cab booking service TaxiForSure, which was later sold to Ola Cabs.

Why is Koo Gaining Popularity?

Koo App was formerly designated as an AatmaNirbhar App as it was a part of the AatmaNirbhar Bharat App Innovation Challenge in August 2020 and won it with other apps like Zoho and Chingari — the local version of TikTok. The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi himself encouraged the Indians to use the App.

Not only him, several other ministers like Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Law & IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and also many Members of Parliament like Tejasvi Surya and Shobha Karandlaje, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa. Big names like Isha Foundation’s Jaggi Vasudev, former cricketers Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble are among the other celebrities to have joined the app.

In addition, the Union IT Ministry, India Post and the Niti Aayog are among the government departments to have an account on the app.

But Why the Centre is supporting it?

The Indian government supporting the app indicates that the government wants the foreign sites to be replaced by something Made in India. Koo App founders also maintain its sharp focus on the Indian market, onboarding more and more users, and making its place in the audience. It is a very efficient app which came at a time when the microblogging site Twitter was upsetting Indian government and also several users over blocking of certain accounts.

Modi-led government wants to reduce the dependence of the nation on foreign countries wants to make India AatmaNirbhar or self-reliant. Koo App came as a significant step in this initiative.

People should also support Indian origin sites to allow our country to turn from being just a market for other countries to making other nations our markets. India is a developing and growing economy which needs the support of its people.
