A 54-year-old businessman was duped by a thief who impersonated a police officer and stole his phone and Rs 43,000. When Rajashekhara M.M., resident of Peenya II stage, went to his bank to check his balance, he discovered that 43,305 had been deducted from his account.
He told police that on August 31, he lost his phone while traveling on a train. Two days later, the thief called one of his relatives, claiming to be from the Chikkamagaluru police and notifying them that the phone was recovered.
He approached Mr. Rajashekhara through relatives and asked for information such as passwords under the guise of verification. Mr. Rajashekhara shared the information, including the bank account password, because he believed the caller was a police officer. The accused used it to steal Rs. 43,305.
