Epic Games Files Suit Against Google And Samsung For Illegally Cooperating To Block Competition In App Distribution
Previously Epic Games sued Google over running an illegal app store monopoly and the issue was resolved when Epic Games won the case last year in December. Well seems like the issue was not permanently resolved even after the court’s jurisdiction, as Epic Games is again suing Google. This time the company is not only filing the suit against Google but Samsung also.
Epic Games has accused both Google and Samsung of coordinated efforts to block competition in-app distribution. As per the official statement, the Auto Blocker feature on Samsung devices that arrives as a default setting cements the Google Play Store as the only viable way to get apps on Samsung devices, blocking every other store from competing on a level playing field.
If a Samsung user wants to install any app from third-party app stores they need to turn off the Auto Blocker feature which requires 21 step process. As per the company, this illegal anti-competitive dealing between Google and Samsung hurts developers and consumers and undermines both the jury’s verdict and regulatory and legislative progress around the world.
Epic Games has also shared the evidence of the deal between Google and Samsung that was presented in the Epic v Google trial.
In its lawsuit, Epic Games is asking the court to prohibit Google’s and Samsung’s anti-competitive and unfair conduct and mandate that Samsung eliminate the Auto Blocker by default and enable competition. Also, Google’s agreements with OEMs to block competition are illegal. This applies not only to Google but to the device manufacturers that collide with them and they will take all necessary actions to ensure this decision is fully upheld.
