Google has announced its largest expansion of AI Overviews, extending the feature to more than 100 countries and territories worldwide. The expansion, which begins this week, is expected to reach over one billion global users monthly.
The AI-powered search feature, which was initially launched in May and expanded beyond the United States in August, has received positive feedback from users who report finding their search results more helpful with the new technology.
Enhanced Language Support
As part of this significant update, Google has broadened its language support to include English, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. Users in countries with AI Overviews can now access the feature in any of these supported languages, regardless of their location. For instance, Spanish speakers in the United States can now view AI Overviews in their preferred language.
Improving Web Discovery
Google emphasises that connecting users with content from publishers, businesses, and creators remains a crucial aspect of AI Overviews. Since its May launch, the company has introduced several improvements, including:
- A prominent right-hand link display for desktop users
- Enhanced mobile experience with tappable site icons
- New in-line links within AI Overview text
Testing has shown these updates have led to increased traffic to supporting websites compared to previous designs.
Advertising Integration
The company confirms that advertisements will continue to appear in dedicated slots throughout search pages, with clear labelling to distinguish between organic and sponsored results. For mobile users in the United States, ads are now available within AI Overviews for relevant queries, aiming to better connect users with helpful products and brands.
