OpenAI introduces Verified Organization process; Organizations required to complete an ID verification process in order to access future AI models in OpenAI’s API

OpenAI has recently proposed a new Verified Organization method to mitigate unsafe use of AI while continuing to make advanced models available to the broader developer.

Verified Organization process

According to the support page, it is a new way for developers to unlock access to the most advanced models and capabilities on the OpenAI platform. To become verified, a valid government-issued ID from one of the countries supported by OpenAI’s API is required. Each ID can only verify one organization every 90 days. Do note that not all organizations will be eligible for verification, and you may check again at a later date to see if verification becomes available for your organization.

If verification isn’t available at this time, organizations can continue using the OpenAI platform and existing models as they currently do. It is also said that models requiring verification today might become available to all customers in the future, even without verification.

As per the company, a small minority of developers intentionally used the OpenAI APIs in violation of the company’s usage policy; therefore, this verification process is being introduced. It may also be aimed at preventing IP theft.

OpenAI supports identification from over 200 countries. The best way to see if your country is supported is to start the verification process. You can verify your organization by visiting your Organization settings on the platform openai.com.
