Signal App to discontinue its default SMS feature for Android devices

Popular messaging software Signal has decided to discontinue supporting SMS in its Android edition. According to the firm, the change would improve security and privacy, streamline the entire Signal experience, and prevent customers from being penalized for unauthorized SMS texts. The organization believes that SMS support is no longer necessary at this point.

The business will begin gradually deleting SMS functionality from the Android app to ensure a smooth transition. Signal users will have “a few months” to stop using SMS and import SMS messages into another program.

It should be noted that not all Signal users will be impacted by this change. Only Android users who have Signal selected as their default SMS app will be able to see the update. The user must then alter the phone’s default SMS app.

Additionally, they have the option to import each SMS received via Signal into that program. Navigate to your Signal account’s Settings tab to complete this. Click on Chats and then SMS/MMS. You must export your messages and use a different default SMS app if SMS is enabled.

Signal will start presenting in-app notifications to prompt you to export your SMS communications before support expires and select a new default SMS app.

Signal asserts that the main reason for the company’s decision to stop supporting SMS was the insecurity of plaintext SMS messages.

The messaging application also mentions how expensive SMS transmission is right now compared to earlier.
