Tor community welcomes Twitter on Dark Web

Twitter has entered the Dark Web after being blocked by the Russian government, and users can now access the platform through a Tor Onion service to circumvent censorship.

Twitter has launched the Tor onion service, optimising it for the privacy-protecting and censorship-evading network. It is launching a Tor onion service model of its website, optimizing it for the privacy-protecting and censorship-eluding community. Alec Muffett, a software engineer, shared the advice on Twitter right now, calling it “possibly the most important and long-awaited tweet that I’ve ever composed.” The Tor community has also been added to Twitter’s list of supported browsers.

Russian users can access Twitter via the Tor anonymity network, according to cyber-security researchers. “This is possibly the most important and long-awaited tweet that I’ve ever composed,” Alec Muffett, a cybersecurity expert and creator of the Enterprise Onion Toolkit, which simplifies the deployment of Tor onion services, tweeted.

“I am delighted to announce their new Tor Project onion service on behalf of Twitter,” he wrote late Tuesday.

Tor’s anonymity network routes a user’s Internet connection through a network of servers around the world, most of which are run by volunteers.

“Making our service more accessible is an ongoing priority for us,” said a Twitter spokesperson, pointing to Twitter’s “supported browsers” page, which now includes a link to the Tor onion service.

According to data from the Tor Project, 12.77% of Tor relay users were connecting from Russia in March.
