Twitter may be adding built-in podcasts tab

Twitter first ventured into audio with the launch of Spaces in 2020, and it delved even deeper into the medium with the acquisition of social podcast platform Breaker.

As the popularity of Twitter’s live audio product Spaces grows, it appears that the digital behemoth is planning to add a podcasts category to its mobile apps. A reverse engineer, Jane Manchun Wong, uploaded a screenshot of a microphone icon in the app’s bottom navigation bar, which redirects to a website labelled “Podcasts.”

Spaces – a sort of integration for the audio-only chatrooms, would make sense to reorganise it into a separate tab now that it is clogged at the top of feeds. After acquiring Breaker, a social podcast platform, Twitter delved even deeper into the audio genre with the launch of Spaces in 2020.

Twitter is just one of many social media platforms attempting to generate revenue by promoting podcasts. Facebook launched a podcast tool for select creators last year. Reddit recently added the ability to record audio-only Talks. It remains to be seen how far the Twitter podcast will go, but if it does, it will be an important addition to an already popular Spaces.

As demonstrated by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong’s screenshot, the image shows a microphone icon in the Twitter app’s bottom menu bar, which appears to lead to a page titled “Podcasts.”

The screenshot gives no indication of how podcasts might be displayed on the platform or whether it will include Spaces, the platform’s audio-only chatrooms.
