US to block downloads of TikTok, WeChat: Reports

The US Commerce Department has announced that it will issue an order that will prohibit people from downloading the Chinese-owned social apps TikTok and WeChat starting from September 20.

The US Commerce Department has announced that it will issue an order that will prohibit people from downloading the Chinese-owned social apps TikTok and WeChat starting from September 20 (Sunday).

The department’s move is an enforcement of Donald Trump’s original executive order that gave TikTok 45 days to either sell its U.S. business to an American company or face a ban in this country.

However, Trump still has the option to rescind the order before it comes into effect on Sunday. ByteDance has to get the approval of Donald Trump to stop the US ban.

Meanwhile, ByteDance has been talking with Oracle Corp and others in order to set up a new company, TikTok Global that will address the US government’s concerns about the safety of its users’ data.
