Can AI now bring historical photos to life? Find out more about Deep Nostalgia

MyHeritage is an online genealogy platform with web, mobile, and software products and services. According to their website, you can grow your family tree, find new relatives and explore billions of historical records.

Deep Nostalgia is a new AI-powered technique from online family tree service MyHeritage, which adds facial animations such as smiles, nods, blinks, and head tilts to still portrait photos. Using the website or mobile app, users can choose from a set of pre-recorded animations that can be transferred onto their own still photos.

Their website says that Deep Nostalgia is a “video reenactment technology to animate the faces in still photos and create high-quality, realistic video footage.”

However, the service warns users against trying to create “deepfake” videos of public figures, reports NDTV.

Users can crop faces from group shots but cannot yet animate multiple people in one frame. A watermark will be applied to indicate that such animations are generated artificially.

To try this out, you can sign up for free here. For access to a wider range of animations, you can avail of their subscription plans as well.
