“India cricket is in good hands” under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, says former West Indies captain Darren Sammy, who compares the senior Indian batter with MS Dhoni in their ability to get the most out of each other. Five-time IPL winner Rohit will take charge as India’s full-time white ball captain in the upcoming three-ODI and three T20I series against the West Indies, starting in Ahmedabad on February 6.
The BCCI appointed Rohit as the captain after Virat Kohli was removed as ODI skipper following a war of words with the Board.
On the sidelines of Legends League Cricket here, Sammy told PTI: “Kohli has been exceptional in his performances. I don’t think it will affect the team.”
“Rohit has been an excellent captain with the Mumbai Indians, a good motivating leader. I watched him captain Mumbai in the IPL. He’s among the captains who have won, like MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir.”
“I’m not worried about Indian cricket. It’s in good hands,” the 38-year-old said. These captains are known for getting the best out of their teammates. These captains often win awards and have success.
Last season, Sammy recalled how Dhoni scored 18 runs for Chennai Super Kings in the semifinal against Delhi Capitals with three boundaries in the last over.
Kolkata Knight Riders were defeated by Chennai Super Kings in the final of the 2021 IPL.
“It’s interesting to see guys like MS. He didn’t do much all season, but when the team needed him to fire in the playoffs, he was out there in full force,” Sammy said.

World Giants captain Sammy led them to the final after they beat the India Maharajas by five runs on Thursday.
The tournament has been a success, every game has been thrilling. We came here to win. Hopefully we will win again and take home the trophy,” he said.
In relation to the former players tournament, he noted: “The fans who saw you 10-15 years (ago) get to see you again. Look at KP (Kevin Pietersen), (Herschelle) Gibbs, all these guys are coming and entertaining. I see a bright future for this league.” World Giants will face Asia Lions in the final on Saturday.
