Florona, flu plus Corona, detected in Israel: May be a birth of new variant
Florona, a double infection caused by Covid-19 and influenza, has been reported in Israel for the first time. It was reported this week that a pregnant woman who was admitted to Rabin Medical Centre to give birth was the first to contract this disease. According to Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, the young woman wasn’t vaccinated.
Florona, however, is not a new variant – it is the result of two diseases interacting at the same time, flu and corona. Several cases of influenza have been reported in Israel in recent weeks, which has prompted doctors to study Florona. A Florona infection indicates a major breakdown of the immune system since two viruses are entering the body simultaneously.
Florona’s discovery coincides with the outbreak of a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, Omicron, which was detected in November of 2021 in South Africa. Most of the countries have already adopted the fast-transmissible variant, which has supplanted the previous variant Delta in the US and UK.
