ICC announced on Monday that India have been fined 40% of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against South Africa in the third ODI.
Referee Andy Pycroft imposed the sanction after KL Rahul’s side was ruled to be two overs short of their target after time allowances were taken into account.
“According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, concerning minimum overrate offenses, players are fined 20 percent of their match fees if their side fails to bowl within the allotted time,” the ICC said in a statement.
Rahul pled guilty to the offense and accepted the proposed punishment, so there was no need for a formal hearing.
The charge was leveled by on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Bongani Jele, third umpire Allauhudien Palekar and fourth umpire Adrien Holdstock.
On Sunday, South Africa won the third and final ODI to complete a clean sweep of the three-match series.
The Proteas were bowled out for 287 in the inconsequential final match, with wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock making 124 and Rassie van der Dussen making 52.
In the end, India came agonizingly close to winning the game but failed to achieve the target due to half centuries from Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, and Deepak Chahar.
