Punjab Kings are reportedly set to announce Shikhar Dhawan as their captain. PBKS acquired Dhawan for Rs 8.25 crore at the IPL 2022 mega auction held in Bengaluru last weekend.
The captaincy position was left vacant after KL Rahul asked the team to release him last year, after which he was drafted by Lucknow SuperGiants. The latest reports indicate that opener Mayank Agarwal, one of two players that the team decided to retain, will succeed Rahul in the role.
In spite of three productive seasons with Delhi Capitals, Dhawan was released. In each of his three seasons with the team, he has scored over 500 runs.
PBKS was led by Mayank in one game of the season in IPL 2021 due to an injury to Rahul. In 2021 the Punjab Kings finished sixth in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 points table and failed to qualify for the playoffs yet again. Overall, they have 23 players on their roster.
England all-rounder Liam Livingstone was acquired by PBKS for a core of Rs 11.5 million, the most expensive at the auction from Punjab Kings. Other players they acquired were Kagiso Rabada, Jonny Bairstow, Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Chahar, among others.
PBKS co-owner Preity Zinta was very pleased with Dhawan’s arrival. “Yeah we got Shikhar Dhawan. Always wanted him in our team,” she said.
