Lionel Messi tested covid positive
Paris Saint-Germain announced on Sunday that Lionel Messi has tested positive for Covid-19 and has been placed in self-isolation. Four players from PSG tested positive for the virus ahead of their match against Vannes in the French Cup. An emotional exit from Barcelona last summer led to a difficult start to life in the French capital for the Argentinian. Despite scoring five goals in the Champions League, Messi has scored only one goal in 11 league appearances for Paris Saint Germain (PSG).
As PSG announced on Saturday night, none of the players were identified at the time. But in a new statement on Sunday, the club named Messi as one of those who had tested positive. Among the others was a staff member.
PSG’s first Ligue 1 match since the winter break will likely also be postponed due to his absence next Sunday when they travel to Lyon.
Three other players tested positive for the same substance: full-back Juan Bernat, back-up goalkeeper Sergio Rico and teenage midfielder Nathan Bitumazala.
PSG said they respect isolation and follow all health protocols.
Covid cases have topped 200,000 a day in France this week.
