Sony’s Upcoming WF-1000XM5 True Wireless Earbuds Unveiled Via FCC: New Design Changes and Potential Technical Upgrades

Sony has been making waves in the true wireless earbuds market, thanks to its popular WF-1000XM3 and WF-1000XM4 models. However, a recent discovery by The Walkman Blog suggests that Sony is set to launch an updated version of the WF-1000XM4, and the WF-1000XM5, with several notable design changes.

Design and Features as per the FCC listing

One of the most significant changes is the more compact design of the WF-1000XM5. The earbuds have a more rounded bottom, which should offer improved comfort for users. The previous model, the WF-1000XM4, was already a more ergonomic alternative to the WF-1000XM3, so this new design should make them even more comfortable to wear for extended periods.

Another design change is the removal of the color-contrasting microphone grille from the WF-1000XM4. It’s unclear why Sony has made this change, but it could be for aesthetic reasons or to improve the sound quality of the earbuds. However, the proximity sensor remains, which detects when the earbuds are in use and automatically pauses playback when they’re removed from the ear.

Another potential design change is the switch to a dual-driver design. This would mark a departure from Sony’s single-driver approach, which it has used in previous earbud models like the LinkBuds S. Dual-driver earbuds have become more common in recent years, with many manufacturers claiming they offer improved sound quality.

In addition to the earbuds, Sony has also updated the charging case for the WF-1000XM5. The case still supports wireless charging, but it now has a pairing button. This suggests that Sony may have removed the pairing option from the earbuds themselves. It’s unclear why Sony has made this change, but it could be to simplify the pairing process for users.

Pricing

Unfortunately, there’s no word on pricing or a release date for the WF-1000XM5 yet. However, given the FCC filing and leaked photos, it’s likely that Sony will announce the earbuds in the near future. Fans of Sony’s previous earbud models will be eagerly anticipating the release of the WF-1000XM5, which looks set to build on the success of its predecessors with a range of design changes and potential technical upgrades.
