Samsung Square-Shaped Smartphone with Extendable Screen
Even if a foldable display allows its users to enjoy a lot of convenience when it comes to the form factor design, there are certain issues that pulls them down from being the best design for a smartphone device. Some of the identified issues in a foldable display includes the spring-back effect in metal layers, panel crack issues, and lower impact resistance. All these issues make foldable display smartphones less reliable and durable.
The Samsung patent suggests of an approach that can be adopted to build flexible displays that will overcome all these challenges of a foldable display and which helps in ensuring both longevity and better user experience. Speaking of the core elements of this design, it consists of a display panel having distinct sections, a support member that is crucial for flexibility, and also a filling member for addressing specific issues(spring-back effect and lower resistance).
This new structural innovation gives emphasize on parallel alignment and unique connections, and the support member design offers in giving more flexibility and resilience to the display. Also to add, the filling member prevents the spring-back effect and enhances the impact resistance. The additional parts reveals that the display can be extended multi-directionally and also points to the use of a sliding core.
Since Samsung is in the works with such an innovative display design, we can expect devices that are more reliable and durable than the current vertical or horizontal foldable smartphones in the near future.
