Xiaomi MIX Fold 3 sturdy hinge made of ultra resistant carbon steel can be folded up to 500,000 times

Ever since the foldable smartphone was introduced in the market, smartphone makers have emphasized improving the hinge as much as possible. The same goes with the China-based company Xiaomi which launched its first foldable smartphone in 2021 named Mi Mix Fold phone and now gearing up for the launch of the MIX Fold 3.

According to Xiaomi, it has made significant improvements in its hinge which is made from ultra-resistant carbon steel that you can fold up to 500,000 times. Lei Jun the founder and CEO of Xiaomi in his post wrote “We have added 1800MPa high strength steel to give the screen wrap around protection so it stands strong in every possible way”. The image shared by Lei with this post says it’s ” a completely new hinge design”. The durability of the hinge has been tested by TÜV Rheinland, which verified that it is good for 500,000 folds.

This hinge has 3 stages connecting rod design which is more complex with 14 movable parts and 198 parts total in comparison to 2 stage design of the Mix Fold 2 with 8 movable parts out of 87 total. Its hinge allows this smartphone to be opened between 45° to 135°. This intensive hinge redesign and improvement has helped makers to reach close to the title of thinnest horizontal foldable which is now held by Honor Magic V2.
