KB5015882 update for Windows 11 fixes issues that cause File Explorer to freeze

Microsoft has issued the optional KB5015882 Preview cumulative update for Windows 11 with 20 fixes or enhancements, including a new OS upgrade and Focus Assist features.

Users can test the planned upgrades and fixes in the August 2022 Patch Tuesday by downloading this cumulative update for Windows 11 as part of Microsoft’s monthly “C” update in July 2022.

Preview releases only offer bug fixes and performance enhancements as opposed to the cumulative upgrades published on Patch Tuesday.

Users of Windows can install this update by visiting Settings, choosing Windows Update, and then clicking “Check for Updates.” Since installing this update is optional, Windows 10 will ask you to do so before starting to download and install it.

Windows 11’s build 22000.829 will be the new version number after applying the KB5015882 update.

Users of Windows 10 can also get the KB5015882 update from the Microsoft Update Catalog and manually install it.

New features in Windows 10 KB5015882

The following are the standout changes or enhancements in the Windows 10 KB5015882 cumulative update preview:

  • New! allows you to choose whether to get urgent notifications while focus assistance is on. Focus assist hides notifications, similar to a do not disturb mode.
  • New! if your device qualifies, gives you the choice to upgrade to a later version of Windows 11 right after Windows starts.
  • A problem is fixed that prevents File Explorer from operating on some devices while the play and pause keyboard buttons are pressed.
  • Fixes a bug that prevents File Explorer from operating when the Start menu’s context menu (Win+X) is used and an external monitor is plugged into your computer.
  • Fixes a bug that causes the taskbar’s search icon to open a blank window that you are unable to close.
  • Resolves a problem that makes some troubleshooting tools unavailable to open.

Users will be able to automatically install the most recent security updates before they obtain access to the operating system thanks to the new functionality that updates Windows 11 to the most recent version on the first run of the operating system. When configuring a new device, this will offer further security protection.

Only websites employing windows.focus() method is impacted by this flaw, according to Microsoft.

The KB5015882 support bulletin contains a comprehensive list of improvements and fixes as well as thorough descriptions of the issues that have been reported.
